These stunning little animals can survive in almost any situation, cost very little to maintain, are busy little animals and are one of the easiest to have and reproduce.Zebra Finches are good birds for the novice beginner as well as for someone who has been around birds for a considerable length of time. They are consistent with their bubbling personalities, during their seven to 10 year life span with hard work and singing. They are one of the most asked for species at pet stores. Zebras need the company of other birds, so plan on getting at least a pair. They also require large area's to fly around in.Zebra Finches grow in several different patterns and colors. Usually, the male Zebra have a gray upper body and wings with a white belly. The beak and legs are a red-orange along with a cheek patch on each side of its head. They have a teardrop mark under the eye that can be brown, tan or fawn. It is commonly called "orange" by Zebra owners. The flanks or sides located just below the wings are chestnut colored again orange with white dots. The males chest is black and white striped like a zebra, resulting in their name. The female Zebra Finch have a gray upper body and wings with a white belly. Their beaks and legs are lighter in color. They also have a teardrop mark under their eyes. Some species of the Zebra Finch have the Fawn, Chestnut Flanked White, Lightback, Pied, Black or Orange Breasted and the Black Cheek.Zebra Finches come from the land down under, where they live in the dry areas, eating mostly grass seeds. That is the basic food for Zebra pets as well. You can offer your finch fresh foods from your kitchen also. As with people, different birds will have different appetites. Trying different combinations of foods to see what your birds like to eat works well. Try mixed vegetables, sprouts, hard boiled eggs (mashed), lettuce, spinach, bread crumbs and corn bread. Most natural foods can be fed to your birds. Make sure you only feed your Zebra Finch the amount of food they can eat completely. Even though the Zebra Finch are sturdy and are used to going long periods of time without water (give water daily), they are not used to going long without food. They need to eat on a daily basis for healthy living. Please make sure their food bowl are filled with seed.
